THE FIRST HIP HOP PARTY
In the summer of 1973, in Bronx, NY, DJ Kool Herc threw the first Hip Hop party. It was here where Herc debuted his "merry-go-round" technique. With this technique, Herc would use "the break", a section of the record where there was a drum or horn solo, for example, and he would play it repeatedly, allowing him to create and stress a new rhythm that could be sustained as long as he wanted, and eventually transition into another song. This technique would make the crowds go crazy, especially the dancers, who would flip, trick and "break" their bodies expressing themselves to what Herc would play. This is how Breakdancing came to be known.
